The instructional design for this course is Group Paced. This course trains officers to perform the duties prescribed for Airfield Operations Officers. Block I, ATC Fundamentals, includes General Flight Rules, ATC Operational Structure, Aviation Principles, Navigation, Basic Air Traffic Control Principles, Weather Reports and Crew Resource Management. Block II, Control Tower, includes Control Tower Procedures and Operations. Block III, Radar Approach Control, covers Radar Approach Control Procedures and Operations. Block IV, Airfield Operations Management and Administration, includes Career Progression, Chain of Command, AOF Publications, General Office Administration, Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems, Flight Inspections, Mid-Air Collision Avoidance, Hazardous Air Traffic Report and Mishaps, Terminal Instrument Procedures Program Management, Contracting, Quality Assurance, Manpower and Incentive Programs. Block V, Airfield Management and Base Operations, includes Airfield Operations Management, Airfield Management and Flight Operations. Block VI, AOF Contingency Operations, includes Contingency Operations. Block VII, Physical Fitness Training, is conducted for Special Tactics Officers (STO) during the approved extended training day.
Before a student is approved for training, a completed SF 88 or DD Form 2808 must be certified and returned by the appropriate MAJCOM SGPA to confirm the individual is medically qualified for Air Traffic Control (ATC) duties. Before students in retraining status depart their home base TDY, the losing MPF must ensure the student has a current, certified FAA Class II or Class 3 Initial Flying Class Physical. Course requires completion of physical exam for Ground Based Aircraft Controller IAW AFI48-123, Section 6I. The home base flight medicine office must update any physical that has expired or will expire within 5 months of the scheduled class date.
Special Tactics Officer Selection Course. All STO candidates will attend the STO selection course at Lackland AFB, TX. STOs will maintain physical fitness using the Physical Ability and Stamina Test (PAST); Combat Control officers will be administered the PAST as performance appraisals of their PT abilities.
