I'm in Lexington, KY. I have been told that the ONLY reserve unit for SERE Specialist is in Washington State, can this be verified? I know that's the only post for Active SERE state side, but I find it odd that, that would be the only reserve unit?

You do know there is no such thing as a SERE unit other than the formal SERE school locations in the Regular or reserve components of the Air Force?

Other than Instructor duty positions connected to the SERE courses, the other duty positions are Wing or Squadron support positions. Generally it's my understanding a 5-skill level or 7-skill level is required for such positions and there is not very many of these support positions at a geographic permanent party assignment location compared to school house duty positions.

As I understand it, SERE prefers their reserve slots to be filled by prior SERE, but there are options when coming in. One of my buddies tried filling a slot at Patrick that had been vacant for 5 years at that point. The way he described it was that Patrick AFB would pay for him to go through all of the necessary training, and upgrade training (OJT). So it is definitely possible if you find a unit with a vacancy and the willingness to spend, you would just have to be prepared to move where ever that slot is which may be a tough sell for a reserve job.

I am sure there are more bases but all I know of personally is Patrick, and the guard base in Portland, Oregon. (and for all I know they may be filled at this point)

A recruiter may have mislead you on that point. With SERE after training you have a three year controlled tour at Fairchild AFB, and often times you can end up back at the schoolhouse. But, as Yukon said SERE fills slots for Operations Support. Typically there are 2 SERE Specialists at every base, some bases have more availability depending on the mission. So Washington is not the only place you will be.

Here's a few articles that may give an idea of the nature of SERE support positions at various wings and squadrons. Determining the CONUS & Alaska/HAWAII breakdown of such AFRES and Air National Guard SERE duty positions is time consuming and then there would be the subsequent work effort of keeping it current.

There are some SERE positions available, but apparently very few. I am a SERE Specialist in the reserves and we were taken off of the critical skills list for FY15. I know people that were sent through all of the training to become a SERE Specialist but units do prefer that someone is at least a 5 level and prior service.

Reserves and ANG are taking on new boot SERE guys. You'll just have to speak to the units in your surrounding area and see if they are willing to put you through the training.

Thanks everyone, I have a recruiter looking into retrain slots right now for AD! As of now he says, it's only PJ for retrain.
