The PAST requirements are tailored to each Air Force specialty. There are six different PASTs on the attached worksheet.
Generally, the non-prior service applicant seeking a GTEP enlistment contract for a career field having a required PAST screening requirement is expected to successfully complete the initial PAST within 14 days of MEPS qualification. MEPS qualification is completing and passing the MEPS physical examination, completing the ASVAB testing and completing the AF TAPAS test. An AFRS Form 7 (liability release) must also be signed. Generally for non-prior service applicants the initial PAST is more suitably to be considered as establishing the applicants fitness baseline rather than being strictly a must pass to qualify test. This suitability perspective is because a must pass qualifying PAST is given prior to reserving the job.
Generally, currently serving active duty service members or members of the Air Force Reserves and Air National Guard desiring to cross train (retrain) out of current AFSC into a career field having a required PAST screening requirement is expected to pass a physical examination and complete the Class III or Special Operations Duty physical examination (if required) before taking the PAST which in this situation is more suitably to be considered a must pass to qualify test.
